NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, launched on August 30, 2026, has begun its journey to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2) to redefine wide-field astronomy [11] [13] [15].
Revolutionizing Survey Speed
Equipped with a 2.4-meter primary mirror, Roman delivers Hubble-like resolution with a field of view 100 times larger [1] [2] [4]. This enables rapid, deep-space surveys, allowing the observatory to capture as much sky in one month as Hubble did in three decades [7] [8].
Core Science Missions
- Dark Energy & Matter: By mapping billions of galaxies, Roman will measure the history of cosmic expansion [7] [8] [10].
- Exoplanet Census: The Wide Field Instrument (WFI) will use gravitational microlensing to discover thousands of distant worlds, while the Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) serves as a technology demonstrator to directly image exoplanets by masking starlight [4] [6] [9].
Status and Longevity
Currently in its commissioning phase, the telescope has successfully activated its 300-megapixel WFI [3] [6] [15]. Due to highly efficient fuel usage during early maneuvers, mission estimates suggest an extended lifespan of up to 22 years [3] [18].
